Johnny Depp stars as the eponymous character in this gothic fantasy romance directed by Tim Burton. When Avon Lady Peg Boggs (Dianne Wiest) knocks on the door of a dilapidated mansion near to her home, she meets Edward, the unfinished, ageless creation of a dead inventor who has scissors for hands. Realising that he is all alone in the world, she takes him home and introduces him to her family.
Most of her neighbours are fascinated by him and his topiary, pet grooming and hairstyling skills are unmatched. However, as Edward falls in love with Peg's daughter Kim (Winona Ryder), the cruelty he faces from her boyfriend and others in the neighbourhood soon takes its toll. The cast also includes Anthony Michael Hall, Kathy Baker and Vincent Price.
